Fairhill Wholesale Nursery at Yandina Queensland

A passion for Australian Native Plants and a need for a change in direction brought Alex and Barbara Hansa up from the south to the Sunshine Coast. With little knowledge of horticulture but much determination they started Fairhill Native Plants in 1975 and delved into a then little explored market.

The selection of Australian plants suitable for the region seemed to be non existing at the time. The plants from Victoria and N.S.W. didnt like the humidity of the sub-tropics so their reliability was in question. Eventually a plant list emerged suitable for our climate augmented with some palms and foliage plants from exotic places to keep the bank manager happy.

Grevillea Robyn Gordon was the first of the tropical hybrids which was soon followed by an ever increasing and still continuing selection of what now constitutes an important section of the Australian Native Plant industry. The interest in Bush plants like Eucalyptus, Callistemon, Melaleuca etc. was very strong in the 80 and early 90 but seems to have diminished in popularity for the home garden at the moment.

Then came the exiting time when tropical rainforest plants were introduced into the range. Rainforest plants are after all the sensible plants to grow in the sub-tropics!! Unfortunately only relatively few of the many beautiful varieties are now excepted by the public, amongst them the popular Syzygium Bush Christmas hedging plant, one of our introductions.

Grafting Grevilleas was another important milestone along our journey. We experimented with more than 100 varieties before we settled on the now very popular range which added to the 40 or so varieties already in production at the time.

Grevillea Golden Lyre Syzygium Bush Christmas  Grevillea Cooroora Cascade

As our expertise grew we started to hybridise Grevilleas and Grevillea Golden Lyre was born and subsequently G.Cooroora Cascade both of which have taken the market by storm.

There are several more new hybrids under consideration at this time.

Over the years more expert staff joined Fairhill and it is they who have made the nursery into what it is today.

There are many challenges yet to be met uppermost of which is to educate the customer and the green stock buyer how to best use the Australian flora. Our catalogue describing 650 species in some detail with a Quick Reference List and pictorial inserts is being constantly updated and is now on the Internet along with our wholesale list which has already served our customers for some time.

When visiting Fairhill Native Plant Nursery you will enter an extensive Botanical Garden displaying a vast range of Australian Plants. Our retail area will dazzle you with a large range of Australian Plants from water plants to ferns and orchids. Our retail staff will give friendly and expert advise including planning your garden. The bookshop is known for its extensive range on subjects relating to Australian flora and fauna. Floras restaurant, set in the tranquillity of the garden, serves gourmet lunches and snacks.

Behind the scenes Fairhill Wholesale Nursery has taken a different path. We serve the market producing well researched hybrids and forms of Australian plants. While retail attracts many native plant enthusiasts looking for something different, wholesale on the other hand now concentrates more on larger numbers of the species in high demand. Over the years we have acquired a sophisticated propagation complex which serves our production well. We are on the lookout for new hybrids and forms all the time as well as continuing our breeding program.

Now that the climate is getting dryer Australian Native Plants will have an even bigger role to play in the conservation of water. Our role at Fairhill is to provide desirable plants to satisfy that need.
