Mornings at Fairhill begin with the hens. The light comes in low across the Farmyard, the grass is still damp, and somewhere a chorus of soft, busy voices is already discussing breakfast. If you have been hoping to buy chickens on the Sunshine Coast, this is where ours grow up, and we would love your flock to begin here too.

We hatch eggs almost every week from our own mixed heritage flock, so there are nearly always chicks somewhere on the farm: tucked under the warm lamps in the brooders, feathering up, or out scratching on fresh ground as growers.

Chickens make friends and recognise faces, so ours go home in pairs, trios or more, never on their own. Buy 5 or more birds and save 15%, and you can mix and match any breeds. Chicks still on heat go home in threes or more, so they always have company.

Mixed heritage hens and their coloured eggs

Our mixed heritage birds are bred from our own hens, a mix of heritage breeds including Welsummer and Wyandotte, crossed with a Cream Legbar or Araucana rooster. We choose those roosters for their ability to sire hens that lay blue-green eggs, and we cross them because pure Cream Legbars and Araucanas are poor layers.

Lift the lid on a nest box of mixed heritage hens and you might find blue, brown, cream, fawn, green, grey, mauve, pink or white. It is half the charm of them, and it means egg colour is never guaranteed.

How our chickens are raised

Our laying hens are pasture-raised and move to new ground every one to two weeks, which keeps both the ground and the birds healthy. They dust-bathe in diatomaceous earth and wood ash, which naturally repels lice and mites, and they roost on metal perches, because in the subtropics wooden perches give mites somewhere to hide. We do not use routine medication on our laying hens.

Seven days before they go to their new homes, our growers and point of lay birds are treated with an Avitrol tablet against internal worms and Pestene powder against mites and lice.

Settling them in at home

Choose birds of the same age from the same group, and shut them in their house for five to seven days before they free range, so they learn where home is. If you already keep chickens, introduce the newcomers at night, in the dark, onto the perches beside your existing birds. An automatic door that opens in the morning and closes at dusk is well worth having.

The chickens are part of every morning here. Ranger-led Animal Farm Adventures run every half past the hour, all morning, with chicks to hold along the way, so you can meet the birds before you choose.
