Meet one of Australia's newest chicken breeds, raised right here at Fairhill.
At Fairhill Adventure Gardens and Bamboo Park, we're passionate about raising healthy, productive chickens that are a pleasure to own. One breed we're particularly excited about is the Quamby: one of Australia's newest heritage-style chicken breeds.
Developed in Tasmania, the Quamby is a dual-purpose breed that combines outstanding egg production with a calm temperament and a strong, heavy body. They're fast becoming a favourite among backyard chicken keepers, hobby farmers and anyone wanting a beautiful, productive flock.
Two fascinating facts about Quamby chickens
Even many experienced chicken keepers don't know these unique Quamby traits.
1. You can tell if a Quamby hen is laying simply by looking at her legs
One of the most remarkable characteristics of Quamby hens is that their leg colour changes depending on whether they're laying eggs.
When a hen is actively laying, the yellow pigment in her legs gradually fades to a creamy white as nutrients and natural pigments are diverted into egg production. Once she stops laying and has a rest, the bright yellow colour slowly returns.
It's a wonderfully practical feature that allows you to quickly see which hens are currently producing and which are taking a well-earned break.
2. They're excellent egg layers that prefer staying home
Quambys are renowned for their excellent egg production, calm temperament and strong foraging ability.
Unlike lighter breeds, Quambys are solid, heavy-bodied birds, making them much less inclined to fly over fences. That's excellent news for backyard chicken keepers wanting birds that are happy to stay where they belong.
Great layers and rarely broody, but when they do go broody they are great Mother Hens.

Hy-Line laying hens
If your priority is maximum egg production, our Hy-Line hens are an outstanding choice.
Originally developed from Rhode Island Red and other heritage bloodlines, Hy-Lines have been selectively bred over generations to become exceptional commercial laying hens. They are productive, hardy and less likely to become broody, making them one of the world's most popular laying strains.

Mixed heritage Easter Egger chickens
Our mixed heritage chickens are bred right here on the farm.
Using carefully selected Araucana and Cream Legbar roosters, we aim to produce Easter Egger pullets that lay a beautiful assortment of coloured eggs, including shades of brown, pink, mauve, blue, green and even lavender.
